About our trip

During June 2009 we, Hugo Rolf Hansen and Bjørn Einar Bjartnes, will attempt to cross the Greenland ice-cap from south to north by using skis, sledges and kites. The total distance to be covered is about 2300 km.

Our mission is to try to take on an adventure which probably has been within us for quite some time. We are both very fond of outdoor life and have gotten to know each other through various kite arrangements. The large plans on setting out on a long trip were first discussed over some late beers. The bar-talk resulted in several trips over the Hardangervidda mountain plateau in Norway. These trips gave rise for bigger plans and eventually the idea of crossing the Greenland ice cap aspired. And the idea turned into a plan.

As opposed to other “expeditions” we have a pretty relaxed view of our trip. Our goal is nevertheless to cross the ice cap all the way up to Qaanaaq on the north-west cost of Greenland, the northernmost settlement in the world. But if lack of wind, accidents or too much bodily pain forces us to abort earlier, we will do so without hesitation. Our main goal is the trip itself and the experiences made. The geographically end point is second.

During the preparations we have relied heavily on others experiences. Especially has Klemet Store in www.skikite.com been of tremendous help. Other good contributors have been Ronny Finsås (www.kitegreenland.com), the man who currently holds the record of 502 km for the longest kite trip in 24 h (Antarctica 2008), Ingrid Langdal of www.jenterikuling.com, Niclas Normann of "the wind-power expedition" who until 2008 held the 24 h record of 440 km (Greenland 2005).

While we are out on our trip Geir Ringberg will be our contact person and link to the rest of the world. He will maintain and update this site and provide us with weather reports etc. We are very thankful for the good support that we are confident he will provide.

We have been inspired by other expeditions and hope that our trip and experiences may be of inspiration for others who seek to fulfill their expeditions, small or big. We shall, if the technology and batteries held, try to keep an updated diary detailing experiences, disappointments and hopefully also successes.
